I was in charge of activities for the month of March and I had the idea to do a Book Club night where we talked about books and all things reading.
I led a discussion about reading. Here are some of the topics we discussed.
Why do you read?
Where do you get your books?
What makes you buy a book versus borrowing it from a library?
Have you ever used Goodreads?
How do you find new books to read?
Do you ever read a book twice?
How many times have you read the same book?
If you are reading a book and you are into it 100 pages and you are not interested it in do you continue reading it or move on?
Do you ever read a book in one sitting? (stay up all night long)
When you find an author you love do you general read all of their other books?
Do you always read the book before you go and see how the movie?
Book vs movie?
The girls LOVED talking about reading. Our discussion went on and on and it was so interesting listening to them talk about what they are passionate about. (A few of our girls are also into writing their own novels and stories...but we didn't get into that.)
For the other portion of the evening each girl took a turn telling us about her favorite book. They thought I was cruel making them choose only ONE favorite book, so I caved and let them bring as many as they want. Most girls brought one and a few girls girls brought an entire series.
I had to keep cutting them off so they didn't ruin the plot for anyone who wanted to read their book. We had a wide variety of books from Justin Bieber, to Sloths, to LDS fiction, lots of fantasy, Vampire tatoo's, romance, mystery...etc.
I wrote down each of their authors and titles so the girls can read each others book recommendation if they choose. I am reading Kaymee's favorite book Entwined right now.I brought 20 of my favorite children books for them to see and they oohed and awwed and my collection. Choosing just one would have been painful for me....but since I was in charge I figured 20 would suffice.
I have lots of favorite books. It was a hard task for me to choose as well. I like lots of different genres. The series I chose to share with the girls was The Children of Promise. It has always been a favorite of mine! (the first time I read it I was a teenager)
To end our night we ate some bagels....because they start with B. And what teenage girl doesn't love a good bagel with cream cheese?
Oriahna, our book queen arranged the books for a group photo!
It turned out that none of the others leaders were able to join us so it was just me and this slew of girls that I adore and I loved every minute of it. It is an activity I'd definitely suggest if your group of girls love to read like mine do.
