Raising Children in the 11th Hour.

My dear friend Victoria was approached to write a book. I helped tend her two youngest girls while she wrote some of it. I read a copy in June and it is now available to purchase on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Deseret Book.

The following is my review for amazon .com:

This is not your traditional parenting book. The author does not give any do's or don't on how to raise children. Instead she shares current research and facts that give you information to form your own opinions and ideas to assist you in your personal journey of parenting.

The book contains 17 different chapters on a variety of topics. My favorites included: outdoor play, Facebook, nutrition, objectification and moral agency.

It would be a great book choice for a book club or Mom's group who wish to discuss topics about parenting and have concerns for raising children in the 21st century. I have already enjoyed discussing it with my sisters, who also in the trenches of parenting.

I was shocked to read some of the stats such as 13 million children, 17 % (ages 2-18) in our country are obese. Fisher, through her research and passion motivated me to make some changes with my daughters nutritional habits, outdoor play & screen time without making me, the reader, feel down on myself.

She shared a new study regarding declining attention spans due to heavy social media and on-line multi-tasking.  I'm glad to be aware of this knowledge as I raise my child who will grow up in a world of technology. (pg. 72)

Since reading this book I have let my child make more mistakes and learn from them. The rooster analogy on Grandpa's farm in Sweden also hit a chord with me. "I learned to stay away from the rooster by my own experience, not because someone told me." (pg. 87)

The chapter on special needs children is moving. The story related about Elina's example with her precious friend Annie will forever remain in my memory.

No matter whether you are a parent, grandparent or educator this book will get you thinking about raising & teaching children in the 21st century.

You can purchase the book here.
