These were my first assignment in young women's. They started out as an ordeal. But the experience ended happily.
Have you ever sewn with tulle?
I hadn’t and if I knew it was SO tricky, I would have sat with my head down and not agreed to help sew all these pillows for each girl in our ward, leaders, old and new & beehives joining us this year.
Hilary, Sharon & I tried ruffling the tulle by sewing it with fishing line, then pining it and sewing it around the pillow. It was doable, not for me, mine looked hilarious, but Sharon’s looked awesome. The only down fall is it took over an hour for ONE pillow and she is my amazing seamstress friend.
I did the math quick. We had enough for 40 pillows, but needed 24 pillows for sure…..that’s 24 hours! Ugh. I was not feeling that.
I was willing to though and I would have if my president wanted me to. I would have stayed up all night long sewing. I hesitantly called her to let her know the situation and I was relieved she agreed with my more simplified version, a tulle bow.
I was so grateful. She’s classy, stylish but not all about fluff and didn’t care that I wanted to ditch the tulle ruffle.
I told her hypothetically that I think it would be more beneficial for me to go and visit each year for 24 hours, an hour with each girl and get to know them then it would be to set at a sewing machine. :)
The girls stuffed them, sewed them shut and I taught them all how to tie this fluffy bow with tulle. I think they turned out great!
On a slightly different note, but still young women related I had a wonderful experience the other night. I went to the temple with the youth. Only 2 YW leaders could go, and I was thrilled to be one of them. The Oklahoma City temple is precious. It is teeny tiny, especially the baptistery. I seriously don’t think I stopped smiling all evening, to and from in the car with those neat kids and during the temple. I had a love affair with doing baptisms for the dead in my time and this was my first time back, as a leader.
I was a bit of a mess. I didn’t know I was supposed to wear white, in the Ogden temple my leaders never changed from church clothes and I didn’t even cross my mind to bring my temple bag. And guess what was in my temple bag? Yep, my recommend. Good thing the Bishop was there. Luckily they have a few extra dresses on hand, so I did get to be in white after all.
I had the toughest job of the night. I was over the towels. I got to to watch the kids get baptized, wrap a towel around them around them and pat em on the back. It was pretty special! When the kids weren’t doing ordinances most of them were immersed in their scriptures, scattered through out the room and it was a beautiful sight.
I’m slowly and surely connecting with each girl. I make a little more progress each time we meet and I love them all already!
I came home to this. Tyson and Lydia found a black widow spider! Eeeeek! Tyson didn’t have a good angle to kill it so he trapped in in some Tupperware instead. I was glad to miss all the action at home.

Going to the temple is one thing I am looking forward to when Russ quits working nights. It was always a sweet experience for me as a youth, too. I'm glad you could go and that you are in young women's now!
c'est vraiment génial d'avoir fait des cousins, super idée... oui le tulle c'est vraiment pas facile pour coudre... heureuse que les filles ont pu d'aider....
You got to be a "towel lady"! Remember how we loved the "towel ladies" in our day?
