No, we haven't started this process yet, but we are getting ready! Here is what I've accumulated thus far to promote her interest and when she is ready to go, I'll have my game plan ready for action. I've made a fun poster too, I guess I'll post that later.
I like to pretend that I know what I'm doing, I trained my nephew Jake a month before he turned 3 and it was a breeze. His parents went out of town for 4 days and left him in my care. He was awesome and with only 2 accidents caught on quickly and never turned back. Why was it a breeze? First of all he was SOOO ready and 2nd of all the is an amazing kid. When he was a toddler in his big boy bed, he'd lay there and wait for permission to get off in the morning, even if he had to go to the bathroom. Seriously, what kid does that?!? :)
I worked in a toddler class for a few years and have helped train a larg handful of kids. That was always challenging because every child is so different and trying to stay on the same wavelength as each parent was sometimes tricky too. But we always succeeded!!!
What I am realizing more and more is everything is so different when it is your own child. What worked with Jake or my other students may not work with Lydia and so I am slowly trying to decide the best method to help her achieve this big mild stone in her life.
When parents in my former classroom would ask me my philosophy about potty training my number one advice or suggestion is to wait until they are ALL the way ready!!!
I am trying to follow my own advice here, it is hard, don't we all start getting tired of paying for diapers, changing them....we get anxious for them to move on to this next phase...etc. I've seen those who don't follow this advice, and YES their kids still eventually get trained but it can take months and those who wait I've seen their kids catch on quickly, talking a matter of days.
Lydia is NOT quite ready, but she is showing more and more interest everyday and for now I think is really great and while we wait here are a few things we've been doing:
- LOTS of reading. I check out a few different potty books each week at the library. They have many to choose from. In my opinion some are obviously better than others, some super lame, but Lydia likes em all, so I guess that is all that matters.
- I teach by example. I let her watch me go and talk about the process. (ex: flushing, washing hands...etc.)
- I talk about her friends & cousins who use the potty.
- Playing with her Potty Doll ($2.50 garage sale) and let her practice wiping the bum.
- Watching silly You Tube potty clips, songs, dances....etc.
Carol Haun my director at WSU Children School once said, "for a toddler to learn to be potty trained is equivalent to an adult earning his or her PH.D." So, so, so true. It is a huge thing for them!
Good luck to all your potty training parents our there and those of you who are the REAL experts and have done this many times before, I'd love to know all of your secrets that worked for you!

Good luck, I might be coming to you for tips soon. Everytime I look at our diaper bill with 2 kids in diapers it makes me cringe, but I also know Samuel is not ready so we are just biding our time.
Laura, We bought the same exact panties for Sicily! We must think alike!
AHHHH! I feel like pulling my hair out. Rylee would go a LONG time dry in her diaper, and then one day she told me she wanted to go potty, so we did, and then she refused to have a diaper on...she wanted her big girl underwear or her pull ups...well she did great, in about a week she went poop and everything, and got her big poop prize, then after she got that, all went down hill, FAST. She started to wet her pants, and then just wanted her pull ups on, wouldtn go when I took her, screaming and yelling, I didnt want to force her, but she wouldnt wear diapers anymore, and I woudl rather pay for diapers, because they are cheaper then pull ups and I HATE potty laundry. Anyway, yesterday I finally had had enough, so I just hid her pull ups, and lied to her (I dont like doing that) I told her that all her day time pull ups were all gone, and she told me to go to the store, I told her I didnt have any money....and that we will just have to wear big girl underwear from now on, she did great yesterday, no accidents, AT ALL ,ALL DAY LONG...then today she has done good....I still have to bribe her to go, she did poop in her panties, but she didnt pee, I dont fret about poop, just the pee at first....but what is your advice? Do I keep going? She will go in the bathroom and get on and go by herself and just need help getting her clothes back on, but she is so stubborn....UGH! I am going crazy...I honestly dotn think she is 100% ready, but she wont wear diapers, like she rips them off, and we have even taped them on.....huh...maybe I am wrong and she IS ready and I am just going about it the wrong way? I dont know...ok that was long...
Good luck! We will be trying that here soon enough and I'm nervous!
Looks like you are ready for potty training, super ready. I'm sure with all your preparation she'll train very quickly. I on the other hand just keep buying diapers and figure when Nathan is 3I will consider trying.
