Duke the War Dog

Guam has a very interesting and unique history. It wasn't my plan to research it or learn about it right away. But it is everywhere and the most interesting part occurred during WWII.

Mom called me up one day and she told me about a book she had been sharing with the children in her library at Club Heights. It is called Duke and it is about a War Dog on Guam. I told her about a Dog Memorial that we passed by the other day and she told me to go check it out.

24 dogs were buried here and Duke the Dog was one of them.

Among other things these dogs were trained to find enemies on the island using codes instead of barking. I read more about their training here. Its pretty fascinating.

Details about the book are here.
