After we ate lunch on Tuesday we jumped in the car and headed to Carthage. We watched a 20 minute movie about Joseph Smith and then took the tour. We had told Lydia all about this place and she knew to act extra reverent while we walked around. (And not to step on any alligators….her idea.)
She was proud to find yet another statue! Jesus was a pretty good find.
This is the view from the front.
The tour started on this side of the jail and we entered into a add on kitchen. It was a surprisingly nicer jail than I had imagines. The 3 days they occupied this place were in pretty good conditions, so much better compared to liberty.
This was the add on kitchen where they prepared food.
All the rooms except for the upstairs dungeon had lots of big windows. They knew Joseph wouldn’t be safe from Mobs in here and they moved him upstairs.
The upstairs dungeon was hot and did not have a lot of ventilation.
It didn’t have much light either.
The day the mobs came to find Joseph Smith the lock at this door at been left unlocked. They don’t know why or who did it.
The room was pretty surreal. I was glad to get a chance to be in it. We heard the recording I had heard about. The spirit was thick and I just let it wash over me as I sat and reflected on the influence of the gospel in my life. These men gave there life for the building up of the kingdom of God. I don’t worship Joseph Smith, but I sure do revere him and honor his name.
This is the original door. Fact: A piece of the door had been sawed off years ago. Someone took it home as a souvenir. Then years after that it was returned and placed back on.
A better view of the door.
This wraps up our trip.
I am still so grateful we were able to go and partake of the amazing spirit we felt at all these church sites. I love church history. I love this work. I love my Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ. I feel so blessed to have the restored church on the earth again, as it is such a big part me and who I am.
