Being Teachable

It was recently spring break. That meant no Seminary for Tyson, lots more work shifts for him & no Caden for me because his family went on vacation.

With Caden around I do lots of play dates with friends, outings to the park as much as I can and other things similar to that. But my focus is always divided between two of them and the atmosphere more fast paced and life a little more chaotic.

I took  advantage of my one on one with with Lydia this week...9 days in a row. We didn't leave the house much at all and it we had the most wonderful time.

I learned to love something new about my daughter and I really admire this quality she possesses.  She is incredibly teachable! I don't know if she was born this way, if it is a talent, a spiritual gift or something she merely chooses to be.

As for me, I have been taking every opportunity to teach her as much has I can. I sat back and thought about the things she has been learning lately and it is quite the list. I am so impressed with her, she is so talented, bright and is growing into such a good person. I don't post about this to brag in the least, but just to record our spring break week we shared together.

Here is goes....

I showed her how to fold t-shirts and pants. So simple, why hadn't I thought of this before? She does her pajama's every day and puts them under her pillow. She can fold blankets now too.

I am teaching her how to read. More on that later.....i I found a great resource & its so cool!!!!

I taught her to sing Happy Birthday in French & we made a video for Marie.

You can watch that here.

She has learned the names of the first presidency & twelve apostles. Crazy! I didn't know there names until I was a teenager. She has a great memory and associates fun things with each of them & once again, all her own interest & idea. We do talk about them, listen to them and she wanted to know there names. I have hung the chart from the conference Ensign down low on the wall for the past few weeks.

I let her set the table however she pleases, as long as she's helping I don't care if it is perfect. I eventually want to teach her where and what goes on what side.

I am teaching her the Canadian National anthem. It is coming along and is oh so precious.

She is always asking which is her left and right. I need a better way to get that to stick.

After she offered to vacuum (with our little one) I showed her how to wrap up the cord. She thought that was just about the coolest thing ever and does it on her own now.

Tyson's taught her how to do push ups and sit ups. Now that is pretty stinkin' adorable!

We have a map on our wall and we are constantly getting after her for touching it with her messy dinner fingers, but when they are clean we are happy to talk about it and let her touch it all she wants. She wants to know where everyone lives, cousins, Mickey mouse, where Dad served his mission.....etc. She knows a couple of states. Once again, something else I didn't learn until 7th grade history. This girls got me beat!

I want to teach her to sew. So far I hole punched a circle in a cardboard pizza plate and she has been weaving with yarn and a "needle." Don't know what our next step will be but I'll think up something. Suggestions?

I'm always on the lookout to see what her interests are and I get inspired off of that, a skill I learned when I planned lessons for my preschool aged students.

I love intentional teaching moments, but the spontaneous ones are pretty special too. We were taking a walk the other day and got to talk about the world around us, blossoms, tulips, buds on the tree's, sunsets, dandelions, birds, fish.... the lake. We have been growing grass this entire week and it is looking great!

It is good for me to slow down every now and again and put real effort in teaching Lydia. I'm lucky to live with a 3 year old sponge and she really does soak up whatever it is I have to offer as long as I take the time, make it fun and have some passion about it right along with
her.

It helps to have our awesome Dad around to cheer her on too and get excited when she learns something new and wants to share it with him. She's definitely a Goodrich. She loves a good puzzle.

Even with all this Mommy time all to herself, I caught her drawing this picture.

She said: "Mom, I willy, willy miss my Caden."
Ha ha. I just can't win. :)
PS. Two weeks ago I spoke in church about how to best prepare for conference. I learned you do that by “immersing yourself in the previous words” and I’ve really tried hard to do that.  I am totally stoked for General Conference! Lydia and I have big plans to watch it all together and Tyson will join us when he is not working.
Happy Conference watching!
