I turned another year old in August and for my birthday we went to lunch at a darling cafe called, Olexas. The warm buttercream frosted slice of birthday cake was scrumptious. Afterwards we went searching for a place to watch the Eclipse.
I felt a little bit like the 5 Virgins may have when they didn't have oil in their lamps and couldn't find any anywhere. I was definitely unprepared when it came to acquiring solar eclipse glasses. I knew it was coming and yet I never bought any. A week before the eclipse they were impossible to find anywhere. We tried, believe me. We had toyed with the idea of driving up north to Tennessee to be able to see the full Eclipse, but I didn't want to make the long drive when we didn't even have the glasses.
We ended up at the Botanical gardens in Birmingham. We had never been there before and we arrived, found a nice group of people and sat near them and they gave us a pair of glasses to use. We didn't have our own, but I was grateful to have one pair to share so we could see the eclipse.
It was spectacular.
Neat to see the light change so drastically in the middle of the day.
And we couldn't believe all the bugs that came out thinking it was night time, we even saw some birds in distress not understanding what was going on.
The crescent shaped shadows were really neat too. I'm glad that someone came more prepared than we did and that they were willing to share.
We spent some time exploring the gardens and these big leaves reminded us of Guam. We went to the YMCA and swam in the outdoor pool and then for dinner we went to Chic Fil A.
