This was probably my favorite day in Bali. Oh gosh, they were all fabulous days but this one took the cake because it felt totally authentic and it was something I'd always wanted to do. It happened to be the day I was in charge of too and I chose biking through rice paddy fields. It was even better than I had hoped for.
The day started bright and early and we took a 2 hour drive across the island and up a windy mountain to this location. They fed us breakfast and we had a friend in our group. Poor guy was stuck hanging out with 5 American, Mormon Moms.....he was from Cambridge and his accent was dreamy. He wanted to know what he all thought of Trump and he had questions about the church too. The ride was about 3 hours total with all the stops.
We biked and biked....and our host Arya let us stop and start as much as we wanted too to soak in the views and see the people.
This was a shrine for making offerings specifically for the rice paddy harvest.
When the men turn 18 they get their teeth shaved and it is part of becoming a man.
This is the stinky durian fruit that smells (even from the trees.)
People placed their offerings before the entrance of the bridges.
These little rascals were chasing each other around with this scary head. Kids will be kids no matter what country you are in.
This was at the top of a huge, steep hill. They had a scooter we could hop on and take a ride to the top.
The school was closed for the day. Otherwise we would have got a tour of it.
This is some rice drying out in the sun.
Near the end of the trail we met some nice families that live in the village. They were putting together rice cones to sell for the offerings.
An outdoor kitchen area.
What a tree.
We stopped for some fresh fruit and coconut juice.
It was truly an unforgettable experience. If you go to Bali this is a must do.
Book here at Bali By Pedals: and tell Arya that Laura sent you. ;)
